Kaitieki

Kaitieki means guardian, its really important that we take a leadership role in discharging our kaitieki obligations in our rohe as Ngāti Porou.  So, what does this mean for Air Ruatoria? We operate a normally aspirated engine powered aircraft, its not a jet but every flight will emit carbon.  Like every business we will consume resources however our aim is to minimise waste and consumption to minimise impacts on the whenua, Te Taiao and our communities.  We have designed our flight paths and the heights we will fly to minimise aircraft noise.

We are working with a local community group on a project to riparian plant a puna (spring) and waterway that is important to whānau.  We will koha and plant native trees to mitigate carbon emissions relating to our operations.  If you would like to contribute or know more about this project, please contact us.

FAQ

How long does it take to drive to Ruatoria from Gisborne?

You should allow approximately 2 hours so you can take a break.  It takes the locals about 1 hour 40 minutes.

Is there anything else I can do in Ruatoria?

Yes, there are local shops in the township which provide the basics.  The closest beach is Tuparoa, approximately 5 km east of Ruatoria.  Its not a swimming beach and you have to drive down the creek bed to get to the beach, it's not straight forward if the grader hasn't been through.  You can also drive up to the foot of Hikurangi, approximately 13km from Ruatoria aerodrome up Tapuaeroa Rd.  Tikitiki Church (St Andrews) is 15 km to the north on SH 35 and is a beautiful tribute to the local people who served in WWI.

What about accommodation?

Options are pretty limited in Ruatoria apart from ENZ of the Earth.  There is motel accommodation at Hicks Bay (Motel), Tokomaru Bay and at the Tolaga Bay Motorcamp.  Another alternative is Te Puia Springs Hotel.

If you are freedom camping, there are plenty of spots to park up and enjoy the place but just remember to leave the place as you found it.  If in doubt, ask a local.

What happens if the weather is bad and we can’t fly?

We will give you plenty of notice if the weather is poor and we can't fly that day.  Check out our Cancellation and Transfer policy on our website.

What do I need to wear for the flight, what can I take?

Comfortable clothing is fine, footwear is essential.  You can bring a small bag, camera, wallet and keys etc.

Do you offer Charter flights?

Yes, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
